Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the breezes among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day after day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for website a few more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
